日治時期鐵路分布圖

1895年起，日人在臺修建鐵路，1901年淡水線完工，至1908年4月20日，基隆到打狗〈今高雄〉縱貫線全線完工通車。之後由於島上產業快速發展，臺中線所經山路造成運輸瓶頸，於1919年開始修建縱貫海岸線，1922年海岸線由竹南至彰化完工通車。另外，1917年宜蘭線〈基隆至新城〉在1924年通車，屏東線〈高雄至枋寮〉也在1941 完工通車。
